We have compiled a list of the best insurance companies.
This is a follow up where we discussed how the best health insurance plans were independently compared against each other.
Company Ranking Terms
Rank. Based on score. Commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid plans were evaluated and ranked separately.
Score. 0 to 100, based on company’s performance relative to other plans in member satisfaction, prevention and treatment, and accreditation by the National Committee for Quality Assurance. Commercial plans were evaluated in 50 measures, Medicare plans in 44, and Medicaid plans in 41.
State. Where plan operates.
Type. HMO–health maintenance organization (primary-care physician coordinates care within network; members pay out of pocket for out-of-network care). POS–point-of-service plan (plan pays part of the cost of out-of-network care).
The Honor Roll
These health insurance plans sit atop the U.S. News 2009-10 rankings of commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid plans. The rankings are based on data collected and analyzed by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (independent of insurance companies, which allows a fair rating, so you know they honestly feel these companies are the best), managed care’s major accrediting and standards-setting body. Scores of 0 to 100 reflect member satisfaction, success relative to other plans in preventing and treating illness, and NCQA accreditation.
